About the Giant Mine Remediation Project
Between 1948 and 2004, Giant Mine was a major economic driver for Yellowknife and the Northwest Territories. When the mine stopped operating and Canada became the site custodian, attention focused on the environmental issues left behind. The most notable is the 237,000 tonnes of arsenic trioxide stored in underground chambers.
The Giant Mine Remediation Project proposes to leave behind a site that provides an opportunity for many future uses by the community, as determined by the community.
The Project's main objectives are to:
- minimize public and worker health and safety risks
- minimize the release of contaminants from the site to the surrounding environment
- remediate the site in a manner that instills public confidence
- implement a cost-effective and robust approach over the long term
The Project's primary goal is to protect human health and safety and the environment. This requires long-term containment and management of the arsenic trioxide waste and water treatment, as well as cleaning up the surface of the site.
Guidelines set out the Project's commitments on environmental protection, public and worker health and safety, and community engagement.
These guidelines were developed with input from:
- the City of Yellowknife
- the Yellowknives Dene First Nation
- Alternatives North
- The North Slave Métis Alliance
- Environment and Climate Change Canada
- Fisheries and Oceans Canada
The Giant Mine Remediation Project is funded through the Northern Abandoned Mine Reclamation Program.

This unique and complex Project has undergone extensive expert and public review. The Closure and Reclamation Plan is robust and diligent, and supports the Government of Canada's commitment to ensuring the health and safety of the public and protection of the environment.
A public registry compiles reports and studies about Giant Mine related to the remediation plan. This includes:
