General updates

Parsons announces 2025 GMRP Scholarship recipients

Parsons Inc., the main construction manager for the Project, is thrilled to announce the 2025 recipients of the Giant Mine Remediation Project (GMRP) Scholarship, administered by the Yellowknife Community Foundation.

Parsons created the GMRP scholarship in 2017 to support Indigenous students pursuing fields related to the remediation of contaminated sites, including business administration, environmental sciences, and skilled trades.

This year’s 2025 recipients of the scholarship are:

  • Zhanayii Drygeese, who is studying Environment and Natural Resources Technology
  • Ty Lafferty, who is studying Environment and Natural Resources Technology
  • Rebecca MacLellan, who is studying Office Administration
  • Treyleen Neyelle, who is studying Office Administration
  • Divine Sanspariel, who is undertaking a Welder Apprenticeship

These outstanding students were selected for their educational goals, achievements, and skills, as well as for their personal qualities and how they envision their role in ongoing remediation efforts. They have each been awarded $3,000 each to pursue their studies.

Christmas Toy Drive

In December, members of the Giant Mine Remediation Project team and Project contractors collected new, unwrapped gifts for children in the Yellowknife area. Hundreds of toys were brought in and dropped off with the Salvation Army to distribute. The Salvation Army’s campaign is able to give gifts and hampers to between 400 and 500 NWT families each year thanks to the generosity of Northerns like those who participated in the Project team’s toy drive.

Media technical briefing

In November, the Project team invited local media to attend a technical briefing and Giant Mine site tour. Six reporters joined members of the Project team at CIRNAC’s Yellowknife office for an update on various aspects of the Project before travelling to tour the site, including the new Water Treatment Plant. The Water Treatment Plant is currently under construction but is expected to be fully operational by early 2027.

The Project team looks for opportunities to host media on the site ever few years, recognizing the complexity of the Giant Mine site — particularly the frozen block method and environmental monitoring systems — is best understood visually and with subject-matter experts present to answer detailed questions in real time. In addition, site tours offered at different times during the remediation allows the media to see and capture how the work is progressing.

While site access must remain limited, the Project remains committed to sharing its work with the public; media briefings like this are one way we can bring the Project to the broader NWT community.
