Project schedule update
As reported in the May and June 2022 newsletter, the finalized Project Implementation Plan included an updated schedule for the roll-out of the remediation work and new estimated timeline for the Project's completion. The Project extended its remediation phase to continue until 2038.
Site update
Water treatment plant design update
Preparations are underway to remove existing structures and utilities at the future site of the new water treatment plant. The water treatment plant design is at 99% completion and is expected to go out for tender by mid-October 2022. The award of contract to the successful bidder is scheduled for mid-March 2023 and the Project anticipates construction activities will start in late spring 2023.
South Pond dewatering study
The Project is beginning the South Pond dewatering study. This study aims to provide the Project with valuable information on the ability to dewater the South Pond tailings before we move the tailings to other containment areas during the final remediation. The study is anticipated to take place through September 2022.
Engagement update
Rights holder and stakeholder engagement sessions and site tours
During the summer months, the Giant Mine Remediation Project conducted various in-person engagement sessions, as well as tours of the mine site with various Project rights holder and stakeholder groups. While engagement sessions are a consistent and frequent element of the Project, site tour opportunities are limited to the summer months. These tours allow rights holders and stakeholders to see the status of the site first-hand, and receive updates about the remediation work ongoing at the site. These engagement sessions and tours included:
- members of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation
- members of the North Slave Métis Alliance
- local Members of the Legislative Assembly
- the Project's Aquatics Advisory Committee, which includes representatives from:
- the Yellowknives Dene First Nation
- the North Slave Métis Alliance
- the City of Yellowknife
- the Project Working Group, which includes:
- members of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation
- members of the North Slave Métis Alliance
- representatives from the City of Yellowknife
Highlights
Revegetation engagement sessions with Yellowknives Dene First Nation and North Slave Métis Alliance:
In early July, the Giant Mine Remediation Project's engagement team met separately with Yellowknives Dene First Nation Elders and youth, then with North Slave Métis Alliance Elders to engage on the subject of revegetation as part of the remediation process. During these engagement sessions the Project listened to each group's thoughts for what sort of plants they would like, or would prefer not, to see in future revegetation planning.
Yellowknives Dene First Nation student tour of Effluent Treatment Plant:
In early July, Yellowknives Dene First Nation students were given a guided tour of the Project's current Effluent Treatment Plant. The students toured the plant to see real-life examples of environmental monitoring in action. This summer, the students completed the Eco Canada BEAHR course, "Environmental Core." This introductory course for adult training is designed for those looking to gain employment in the green economy or learn about the environment and environmental industry practices. More information on Eco Canada's BEAHR Indigenous training programs can be found on their website.
