What should I bring to my first income assistance meeting?

Income assistance is a program of last resort for people who don't have enough money to meet their basic needs. Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada follows the Yukon Government's rates and rules set out in the Social Assistance Act.

If you don't bring in all the documents listed below you may not be able to receive income assistance.

Required Documents

Social Insurance Number (SIN):

Your SIN is a nine-digit number that you need when you work in Canada and to access government programs and benefits. (XXX-XXX-XXX)

Status Card for yourself and all family members:

If your partner and/or children are not status, please bring their Yukon Health Care Cards.

Your husband/wife or common-law partner:

If you have a spouse or a common-law partner, they must come to the appointment with you.

Income Information:

  • Pay cheque stubs
  • Employment Insurance stubs
  • Child support receipts
  • Bank statements
  • Any other documents that show your income

Expense Information:

  • Rent receipt
  • Fuel bill
  • Wood bill
  • Electrical bill
  • Any other bills or receipts: daycare, bus pass, etc.

Record of Employment:

You can obtain this from your employer.

Job Search Form:

Most people on income assistance must show that they are looking for work. Pick up this form from our office before your appointment. Fill it out and bring it to your appointment. Footnote 1

Tax Return:

Bring a printout of your tax return to your first appointment. This will show your income and whether you will receive a tax return this year. You can get this 'notice of assessment' by calling the Canada Revenue Agency at 1-800-959-8281 or by registering for a "My Account" on the Canada Revenue Agency website. You can also call or go to your MP's office. Footnote 2

National Child Tax Benefit:

If you have children you must bring in printouts of your National Child Tax Benefit. This shows how much money you are receiving from this program. You can get this by calling the Canada Revenue Agency at 1-800-387-1139 or by registering for a "My Account" on the Canada Revenue Agency website. You can also call or go to your MP's office. Footnote 2

Landlords form:

If you are renting, pick up this form from our office before your appointment. Ask your landlord fill it out and bring it to your first appointment.
